X-Ray Vision:
Tehran is a major city in Iran containing up to 12 million people and many more cars. Downside, the city contains so much pollution that they can barely see the mountains that surround them during the day. Before the Air Quality Control Co. was established there was a lack of pollution control, but more importantly there were many health issue and Iranians dying from the carbon monoxide poisoning. Everyday, pedestrians and even people in cars had to wear mask to protect their lungs from the rising levels of carbon monoxide. Tehran exceeded the World Organization’s standards by 40 percent to 340 percent. In other words, there were many days when schools were closed and those incapable of enduring the carbon monoxide with a mask on were urged to stay inside. At one point, all citizens were asked to stay inside their houses because the carbon monoxide concentrations were at emergency levels. In present day Tehran, there have been many significant changes that are making the lives of those who live in Tehran healthier. For example, they have outlawed cars that do not have the required natural gasoline engine or pollution-reducing catalytic converters. Many citizens are thankful because they do not have to wear masks anymore, and so is the rest of the world.

There is such an issue with pollution on our planet. Not just off in foreign countries with towns that we've never heard of, but right here in the San Fernando valley. I know that everyone has woken up some mornings and seen that lovely haze hanging over the valley. That's smog aka thats the crap that you're breathing in. As someone with asthma, I really know how messed up the air quality is. When I go to Wisconsin, I don't have to take an inhaler or anything. But when I'm at home I have a daily inhaler, a daily pill, and an instant relief inhaler just so I can breathe. Is there not somethint wrong with that?
whoa, this is crazy i cant believe that they are having that much trouble that they have to close schools on some days. the amount of pollution we have these days are crazy. there is like a permanent hazyiness over L.A. because of pollution. I think that all the nations need to come together and work on using alternative means of producing our goods. Yes, it is a costly opperation, but we are going to have to stop polluting our earth. i mean, we only have one planet to live on so why do we keep on killling it.
I think pollution is something we are going to have to actually deal with very soon. The unfortunate thing is that I don't think any nation will commit itself to cleaning up the Earth until something drastic and very tragic occurs. It seems like a disaster usually has to occur before nations are willing to be held accountable for their actions.
I agree with everyone else on the fact that it's crazy that there is this much pollution. Of course, living in LA we see smog and know about all the problems with global warming, etc, but this is so extreme!
Pollution is a problem that has been put on the back burner for so long that sooner or later, we are going to have to deal with it; however, it's going to be hard for all different nations to try to agree on a solution. The most controversial point in this matter will probably be the cost of it, but it's nearing the point where action is going to have to be taken.
I agree that the pollution problem is a real danger to us, but there are even bigger problems too. I was watching this tv program that explained that the amount of pollution in our atmosphere actually serves to deflect some of the sun's rays, so that our planet stays cooler than it would if the air were clean. What this means is that while greenhouse gases build up, pollution is actually helping keep the earth cooler because less sunlight reaches earth. So, if we were to remove all of the pollution, global warming might be an even bigger problem! Sorry, a bit random, but I thought it was interesting.
Hmm...I did not know that this was such a severe problem in parts of the world such as Iran. I would expect something like this from Iraq, where there is absolute chaos. But I didn't expect it from Iran. Nevertheless, it is a terrible thing that the government can just look over the people like that for so long. Government has to watch out for the people, and it sounds like Iran might be starting to do that. But it should never have gotten as bad as you described nthe first place.
Interesting post! Pollution is such a huge problem around the world and everyone needs to focus more on putting an end to (or atleast limiting it). I have learned a lot more about the issue in AP Environmental but I never knoew that it was such a problem in Iran as well. This is defintely something we can all relate to- considering the huge SUVs people drive and the thick layer of smog that hangs over Los Angeles. We really need to start putting more money into fighting against pollution...it will pay off in the end.
Yeah, that's definitely interesting. I really haven't heard about problems with the air quality there and a lot of the Iranians I know have told me that it's turning into an international city. Strange they're looking for a tourist/business industry when their own citizens arent even taken care of.
xavi that is wild that they have to close schools as a result of so much trouble. We must figure out a way to stop this and I think that the only way to do this is going to be if the whole planet becomes aware of the environment. One nation cannot do it all. We must all do it.
It is astonishing that the city even let the levels of carbon monixide get that bad. I understand the tough situations that many cities are in but at some point, someone, somewhere needs to draw the line. When innocent citizens start dying becasue of something the government refuses to take control of, there are some major changes that need to be made.
